The last couple of months I’ve been attending a professional development course on the voice and how it works. We’ve had great fun so far looking at the anatomy of the larynx, breathing, different laryngeal cartilages and the true and false vocal folds with lots more to come. By far the most exciting and beautiful (yet slightly gross) discovery has been watching videos of the voice in action. So I thought I’d share some with you!
Here are four voices singing Kyrie from Victoria’s Missa O Magnum Mysterium with a camera down their throats:
I was blown away with this. How intricate and sophisticated our bodies are. And what heavenly sounds they can make!
Here’s a video of a female voice exploring pitch. See how the folds stretch as the she sings higher and get shorted for lower sounds:
And a silly one that looks and sounds like a sea monster… the laughing at the end is a little infectious.
